How to Run a Personal Retreat at Home
A realistic method for holding a personal retreat inside your own home, including how to handle the interruptions a familiar space brings.
The honest challenge of home
Home carries reminders of chores, work, and habitual roles. A retreat at home has to work against that, not pretend the environment is neutral.
Change what you can change
Rearrange or clear one room so it doesn’t visually resemble a normal working day. Silence notifications rather than just muting sound. Tell household members in advance, and agree on what counts as an actual emergency.
Give the day a different rhythm
Wake and eat at slightly different times than usual, even by an hour, to signal that this is not an ordinary day off. Alternate stretches of writing or reflection with physical movement—stretching, tidying one small area, or a short walk if possible.
Handling the pull back to normal
When you notice the urge to check email or start a task, name it without judgment and return to the day’s intention. This will happen more than once. It is not a sign the retreat has failed.
Close deliberately
End with the same closing step recommended in our general personal retreat guide: one written next step, not a full life plan.
