What happens in the story?
The deer rescues a drowning man, who promises not to reveal where the animal lives. After a queen desires the extraordinary deer, the rescued man betrays the promise and leads the king’s party to it. The deer speaks before the king, exposing the betrayal. The narrative belongs to the Buddhist jataka tradition—stories of the Buddha’s previous lives as a bodhisattva.
