How to Have a Phone-Free Morning
A practical, step-by-step approach to keeping your phone out of the first hour of your day, including how to handle the urge to check it.
Start the night before
A phone-free morning is decided the night before, not in the moment. Charge your phone outside the bedroom, and use a separate alarm clock or clock radio if it currently doubles as your alarm.
The first hour
Decide in advance what replaces the phone: water, light stretching, a short walk, or simply sitting with a coffee and no screen. Having a specific alternative reduces the pull to check “just quickly.”
When the urge hits
The urge to check will happen, especially in the first few days. Naming it silently—“that’s the habit, not a real need”—and returning to your chosen activity works better than trying to suppress the urge entirely.
What to do about anxiety over missing something
If you’re worried about missing an urgent message, agree with close contacts on a separate channel (a phone call, not a notification) for genuine emergencies, and check your phone once, at a set time, rather than leaving it open all morning.
Building it into a longer practice
A phone-free morning pairs well with a broader digital detox or a personal retreat morning routine if you want to extend the practice further.
