Feitian Meditation: A Dunhuang-Inspired Practice of Lightness

Use Feitian imagery as a visual prompt for breath, movement and creative attention while respecting its Buddhist art-historical context.

Look before you interpret

Feitian are celestial beings represented across Dunhuang Buddhist art. Their ribbons, instruments, gestures, and movement change across periods and caves. This meditation does not recreate a religious ritual; it uses careful looking as a modern attention practice.

A seven-minute Feitian meditation

For two minutes, look at one sourced image and name its lines, colors, instruments, and direction of movement. For three minutes, breathe naturally while imagining your attention becoming less rigid—not floating away, simply releasing unnecessary tension. For the final two minutes, write one action that would make your day feel lighter.
